  • N1: Member of N1 Core Operations Team. Activities include user model definition, use case models, N1 management console design prototypes. Recent work includes defining service patterns.
  • Sun Product Life Cycle Process: Member of a cross division team to incorporate human interface and usability engineering activities into the formal product life cycle
  • Past member of Sun wide Management and Monitoring User Experience Working Group and the Topology and Data Visualization Working Group. Worked on policy, specifications and prototypes.

Navigator Team Leader for TELE-TV Media

Management:  

Founding  member of TELE-TV.  Created a new department to design and develop interactive television navigators and services.  Primary management tasks include staffing, labs, budgets and design/development strategies.

Technical Contributions:

  • Team leader responsible for architecture, design, , development and  usability  testing of  the PacTel Video Services Navigator  client
  • Technical evaluation of application services, Oracle  Media Services,     PowerTV OS and other technical components in the  delivery system
  • Participated in creating several interactive televisual  navigator prototypes

Human Interface Group Manager for PacTel Electronic Publishing Services (PTEPS)

Management:  

  • Create a new department to support all human interface activities for  PTEPS and Pacific Telesis  Video Services. 
  • Primary activities include:  staffing, designing and building labs  and  working  with senior  management team on system, service and application strategies.  Participated in high level discussions leading to  the Pacific Telesis, Bell Atlantic, NYNEX joint venture

Technical Contributions: 

  • Worked with cross functional technical, television production, business development and marketing teams to create working prototypes, business  requirements and data models for several services including the PTEPS'  interactive TV shopping experience, the Level 2 Gateway ("Finder" for TV)
  • Operator assisted information applications;   the 511 Service (answering  ambiguous questions for callers i.e.   "What's the name of that new French  restaurant on 4th Street?")

  Management:   
  • Annual business planning ($18.5m), developed on-line project database to  characterize projects in terms of ATG 5 year research plan.  Performed many day to day management responsibilities for group of 85 including  contracts, university relationships, lab management etc.
  • Public speaking on behalf of Apple Computer at numerous national and international venues

Technical Contributions:  

Project Leader Home Automation and Intelligent Environments Investigation, emphasizing home entertainment technologies including  Intelligent TV (advanced user interfaces for on-line TV programming  services,  remote  controls). Worked in the area of conversational interfaces, systems for on screen  program selection and recording, remote control prototyping system

1987 - 1990 ATG   Applications Laboratory Manager, Technical Contributor
 

Started the lab, built a group of  12 people.  Specialized in two areas:

  • Spider:  Hybrid network for collaboration involving desktop video conferencing combined with real-time collaborative document applications.
  • Smartifacts:  Prototyping  new kinds of applications utilizing emerging technologies particularly in the area of PDA's and other hand held  devices.  Projects included Smartifacts (investigating reusable hardware cores for  PDA's), SweetPea #1, a hand held CD ROM player  with integrated display and touch screen and the initial prototypes that  led to the General Magic spin-off company

  • Participated in shipping 2 generations of high end computer graphic workstations with turn key applications (hardware and software)
  • Managed the human interface design group and user documentation  group.  Supervised, wrote and illustrated user documentation, designed user interfaces for several applications including planogramming software for the retail merchandising industry

  • Co-Author/Programmer "Designer's Toolkit," the first graphics tablet  based paint program for the Apple II, sold by Apple Computer, Inc. 1980.
